The Daily Brief September 2, 2022
An aphorism from Baltasar Gracián, a quote from Eric Hoffer, and more.
The Daily Text
We will continue today with another aphorism from The Art of Worldly Wisdom:
Character and Intellect : the two poles of our capacity one with out the other is but halfway to happiness. Intellect sufficeth not, character is also needed. On the other hand, it is the fool's misfortune to fail in obtaining the position, the employment, the neighbourhood, and the circle of friends that suit him.
Quote
From Eric Hoffer in his book The True Believer, I highly recommend it to those trying to get a better understanding of the current climate in America and why people are convinced a career conman has their best interests in mind.
Mass movements can rise and spread without belief in a God, but never without belief in a devil. Usually the strength of a mass movement is proportionate to the vividness and tangibility of its devil.
If one is paying attention, one will see this every day. It is clearly shown in many forms with the attacks, such as calling everyone socialists and Marxists. They need to make people into an enemy to advance their movement.

Here is a link to an interesting article from The Conversation about how human nature can keep us away from new things and blind us from threats.
Have a great weekend and I will be back on Monday with another daily brief.
